El Cavall Bernat (Marganell)

The Cavall Bernat is a spur of the Montserrat mountain located in the Bages region, straddling the border between the municipalities of Monistrol de Montserrat and Marganell. Within the massif, it occupies a central position, being located at the westernmost end of the Tebaida or Sant Salvador Region.

For several reasons, among which the following should be highlighted , Cavall Bernat is not only the best-known and most important mountain in Montserrat, but also one of the most emblematic in Catalonia:

  • His almost perfect phallic shape, haughty and slender, has always attracted a lot of attention, and the etymology of his name must be looked for: Carall Bernat; carall is synonymous with penis in a mud language.
  • Its central position, within the massif, and perched on the ridge, make it stand out practically from everywhere, making it one of the most characteristic features of the Montserrat mountain profile.

  • This is a Montserrat pin with its own legend, known as Legend del Cavall Bernat.
  • The reputation of impregnability it enjoyed at the beginning, as well as the less than epic circumstances in which the first ascent took place in 1935, added to the fame and general interest in this mountain .
  • The numerous stories and anecdotes associated with this peak are well known and interesting enough to have deserved to be published in a book by themselves: History of a stone: Cavall Bernat de Montserrat, 1935-1985, by Josep Barberà and Suqué.
  • This is, as of now, the only mountain in Montserrat that enjoys its own club, the Grup Cavall Bernat, which since 1978 gathers those climbers who have managed to reach its summit.
  • Since 2010, the climber Josep Massana has been in charge and Chairs the board that was created in order to give GRUP CAVALL BERNAT sports club status. The aim of this new stage is to give more visibility to the Cavall Group and also to start giving special recognition "HONORARY MEMBERS" to the horse riders who throughout their lives have given prominence to a sport that is not very well known socially. Climbing and alpinism are activities that require a personal and non-competitive improvement that has maintained this spirit to this day. After being recognized as an Olympic sport, indoor climbing takes on another aspect that makes it more attractive for young people. Within its board it has integrated members of the mountain world such as Josep Sicart (former president of the UEC) and Francesc Sanahuja i Toledano (former president of the CEG and the FEEC) Honorary members are recognized through the collections and personal history and that give prominence to their experiences.
  • For all that, as well as for the length, elegance and difficulty of the climbing routes that go up its walls, Cavall Bernat is a peak of reference, and one of the most coveted by the community of climbers.
  • More than 1,500 climbers go up there every year. Particularly noteworthy, due to its importance in the history of climbing in Catalonia, is the opening of the Via Puigmal, in Cavall Bernat, carried out on October 17, 1954 by the climber and alpinist Jordi Álvarez Garcia.
