Torrent de Pareis

The Torrent de Pareis, on the island of Mallorca, is a torrent that begins at the place called s'Entreforc, at the confluence of two torrents: the Torrent del Gorg Blau or Sa Fosca and the Torrent de Lluc. After traveling a distance of about 3.3 km, between large karst cliffs, it ends at the place called s'olla, a section where the bed of the stream widens considerably and where has permanent gouges. The mouth forms a small gravel cove by the sea, connected by a pedestrian path to the tourist center of Sa Calobra, located a short distance away. The Pareis stream crosses the possessions of Cosconar, Escorca, Sa Casa Nova and es Bosc, and in total, counting its tributaries, has a watershed of about 46.5 km². This stream is heavily traveled by hikers, who descend the ravine starting from Escorca to reach the tourist center of Sa Calobra. In 2003, together with the Gorg Blau and Lluc, the Torrent de Pareis was declared a Natural Monument.

The etymology of the name Pareis is unknown. There are different theories that propose its origin: from the plural noun pareis (=pairs) explained by the similarity or parity of the cliffs that border the stream on the right and left (Catalan-Valencian-Balearic Dictionary); of the old perei (= wall) which designates high rocky walls (Enric Moreu-Rey); of paraís, place where the ships are, the bilge of the boats (Joan Coromines); of paradís, a sublime or well-being place (Cosme Aguiló Adrover); and finally paraís, to name places with good conditions of shelter or shelter for boats (Francesc Canuto Bauçà).

On the first Sunday of July, a concert is held there of choral music, which was launched in 1963 by the Catalan painter resident in Valldemossa, Josep Coll i Bardolet. Organized by Bankia and Obra Social Sa Nostra, this performance takes advantage of the special acoustics of s'olla and the beauty of the surroundings of this place.
